Programs

NTAF helps patients facing transplantation and living with catastrophic injury pay for health care. NTAF teaches volunteers how to organize, launch and sustain a successful fundraising campaign. The organization's Patient Assistance Program exists to help transplant patients and victims of catastrophic injury access medical care which might otherwise be unaffordable. NTAF works in close partnership with transplant centers, rehabilitation hospitals and experimental treatment facilities, collaborating to help patients and families streamline their access to NTAF's services. In addition, the organization's Education Program provides organ donation awareness and other relevant materials for community-based fundraisers as well as information about resources and support. Money raised for patients is administered by NTAF in 12 regional funds. Patients apply for assistance grants which are given by NTAF based on financial need and used for uninsured medical expenses. NTAF provides financial services to patients including bill processing, donor acknowledgment and bill payment. The organization reports that over the last eight years, it has distributed over 350,000 Organ Donor cards. As part of NTAF's patient education program, the organization publishes a bi-annual newsletter, "New Start News," to provide information to patients and families on transplantation and services for catastrophic injury patients. In January of 2006, NTAF started an emergency grant program to help patients with a time-limited need for whom fundraising is not practical.
